Problems Yes, Solutions Maybe, Change No
There have been various attempts to try and stop the violence within Parkway Gardens and Woodlawn.
|
Chicago has been home to CAPS since the 1930’s. This solution is most
influential in the reducing of crime because it covers many aspects of the problem. Chicago Area Project has used many ways to reduce crime in the city especially in the Woodlawn neighborhood. CAPS have provided funding for afterschool and summer programs available to children and teens to prevent them from spending time in the streets. CAPS works with city officials like police officers and aldermen as well as residents of Chicago neighborhoods. They specifically work with urban areas with high crime rates such as Woodlawn and Englewood. CAPS also force more police onto the streets to reduce the loitering of gang members on city corners, with more police monitoring the streets violence among residents will lessen. |
In another solution to try to solve the problems Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposes “Chicago only” gun control laws. This law is where legal gun owners must report if a gun is stolen, lost or sold if not, gun owners will be subject to spending up to 180 days in jail. Emanuel also wants the ban of all assault weapons; he hopes to pass the legislation by 2013 summer when crime is expected to sky rocket.
In a third attempt at reducing crime in Woodlawn residents in Chicago start to speak up against gang members and drugs in their
communities. The Chicago Police Department and residents call this “Operation Wake Up” where they report suspicious gang activity. With the help of residents police have made drug bust and arrested over ten gang members throughout the city and the Woodlawn communities.
